Members of The American Legion
Riders Chapter 593 of Converse, Texas, with the help of kind hearted
local businesses and individuals, raised $10,000 over the past three
months for the American Legacy Scholarship Fund and are currently
participating in the American Legacy Run, a 1,900 mile ride from The
American Legion’s headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana to the home of
the 88th Annual National American Legion Convention in Salt
Lake City, Utah. The purpose of the ride is to raise money to help pay
for a college education for the children of those who have died
defending our freedoms since September 11, 2001. Once at the convention,
they will present the check to American Legion National Commander Tom
Bock.
As an unfortunate consequence of
Operation Iraqi Freedom and America’s war on terror, many children of
our active-duty military personnel are now members of single-parent
families. In most cases, this also means their chances to attend college
have greatly diminished. The American Legacy Scholarship Fund helps
ensure that higher education will be a reality for these children.
Providing for the children our military personnel left behind is our
civic duty. An education is a powerful way to show our thanks.
The Legacy Run started on August 18th, however the ALR members from Post
593 left Converse in a caravan on August 15th in order to be
in Indiana for the start of the Run.
The American Legacy Run kicked
off with a national gathering at American Legion Post 64, Indianapolis,
Indiana, near The American Legion’s National Headquarters, on the
evening of August 17, 2006. American Legion Riders and all interested
veterans and motorcyclists from coast to coast joined for this major
fundraising rally.
On the morning of August 18th,
the National Commander and the Riders departed and headed west to
Illinois, and proceeded over five days along I-70 through Illinois,
Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado, and Wyoming, and then southwest along
I-80 to Salt Lake City, collecting donations from Riders organizations
along the way. After arrival in Salt Lake City on August 22nd, the
Riders visited area military installations and veterans hospitals, and
met and greeted each other in the first national convention gathering of
American Legion Riders.
